Washing

Avoid washing your sweater too much and opt for airing it overnight instead when you can. Too much washing can cause damage to the fibres, meaning they begin to break down over time. When you do think it is time to wash it, here are some tips:

  • Do not wash in a washing machine
  • Never tumble dry
  • Handwash in cold water for 5-10 minutes
  • Gently squeeze the soap through and then towel roll to remove excess water
  • Reshape carefully to natural sweater shape
  • Allow it to dry flat and never in direct sunlight or heat
  • Avoid stretching. For Aran Sweaters, visit https://www.shamrockgift.com/aran-sweaters

Storage

To help the sweater retain its shape, it is recommended to fold it as opposed to hanging it. Hanging can lead to stretching over time. A good idea is to store the sweater in a cardboard garment box, wrapped in acid-free tissue paper or inside a muslin bag. This lets the natural fibres breathe. Moths can be a cause for concern, so consider using a moth deterrent like lavender or mothballs, particularly during the summer when the sweater is in storage.
