Choosing a fairground theme doesn’t tie you exclusively to a period. It is a relaxed style, offering you the chance to add a hint of fairground chic or to go all out with a fully-themed day. If you get completely carried away with ensuring authenticity, the National Fairground Archive should have plenty to inspire your creativity.

Dress to impress

Retro fairground might not be totally period exclusive; however, it does tend to be heavily biased towards the 1950s. Coincidentally, there are plenty of 1950s-inspired wedding dresses. Sweetheart necklines, nipped-in waists and knee-length, full-skirted gowns with petticoats would all perfectly suit a fairground vintage wedding theme.

If you are considering a vintage gown, the dress of your dreams could be packed away in a relative’s loft or in a vintage or secondhand shop. Oxfam has a vintage section that might just put your fairy godmother out of business.

For bridesmaids, swing dresses with petticoats are flattering for most body shapes and can be found in a variety of colours and fabrics to match your colour scheme, while wedding blogs  showcase how stunning vintage wedding styling can be.

Decking the halls

Whether you opt to brave the weather and celebrate in a marquee on the lawn or inside a Wedding Venue in Gloucestershire, adding touches of fairground to your decor should be fun. Rustic and colourful are your key words. Think straw bales as additional seating (don’t forget the blankets, as straw itches!), tissue-paper pompoms, bunting, coloured fairy lights, drinks served in mason jars with striped straws, and red and white checked or striped table linen.

Fun and games

A fairground needs stalls. Hiring dodgems and carousels would provide some spectacular photo opportunities; however, if your budget is more restricted, your guests will still be more than entertained with coconut shies, hook-a-duck, candyfloss and popcorn stalls.

This is an ideal opportunity to get everyone involved. Draw on the skills of your nearest and dearest, as people tend to be delighted to be asked to showcase their talents. What could be a better way to create a really special and unique day?
